President Barack Obama has dismissed Gen Stanley McChrystal of his duties as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan following the publication of controversial comments he made regarding the administration.
Obama released a statement shortly after the decision was made noting McChrystal had failed to “meet the standard that should be set by a commanding general.”
Those comments, set to appear Friday in a Rolling Stone article entitled “The Runaway General,” openly criticized senior members of Obama’s administration and in many cases called into question their competency. McChrystal apologized for the comments, saying he used “poor judgment” but his fate appeared sealed prior to his meeting with Obama about the matter.
While Obama dismissed McChrystal he made certain to point out that it was “a change in personnel but not a change in policy.”
