German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Skip Beijing Olympics

German Chancellor Angela Merkel stepped forward and announced that she would not be attending the 2008 Beijing Olympics in response to the recent violence involving China’s crackdown in Tibet.

According to a report in Bitain’s The Guardian Germany’s foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Interior Minister of Sport Wolfgang Schäuble will be skipping the opening ceremony.

Merkel, along with her Christian Democratic party, have been at odds with China’s leaders since the rise in violence in Tibet. Many inside the party have suggested a boycott of the Beijing Olympics remains an option.
