Body of Army Sgt. Matt Maupin Identified, Ends Four Year Search

Military officials confirmed on Sunday that the body of Army Sgt. Keith Matthew Maupin had been positively identified, four years after the 24-year-old was captured while serving in Iraq.

As a 20-year-old reservist in 2004 Maupin had been traveling near the Baghdad International Airport when his convoy came under fire from insurgents. Maupin, along with Sgt. Elmer Krause, were captured and held hostage.

Two-weeks after their capture the body of Krause was found but the fate of Maupin had remained a mystery.

Last week the remains of a body were found and after DNA testing they were positively identified as those of Matt Maupin.

Speaking about his son’s death, Keith Maupin said “Every parent knows the possibility exists that they may have to face the death of their child when they volunteer to go to war. However, those who are fortunate make peace with that and support their soldier, because they enlisted at their own free will.”
