The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer, or MASCC, along with the International Society of Oral Oncology (ISOO) invites professionals in the area of medicine and cancer treatment to attend their Supportive Care in Cancer Symposium in Vancouver, Canada June 24-26th. Professionals from a number of countries who have varying specialties will come together to discuss “methods to minimize cancer-induced side effects, the symptoms and complications of its treatment, and psychosocial issues facing cancer patients and their families,” according to the MASCC website. The theme this year is “Communication – The Key to Care.”
This year’s chairman, Peter Stevenson-Moore, of the BC Cancer Agency, and co-chair Dr. David Warr of the Ontario Cancer Center at Princess Margaret Hospital will be in attendance. Topics include Communication, Hemopoietic and Erythropoietic Growth Factors, Neurological Complications, Nutrition, Emesis Prevention and Management, Thromboembolic Complications, Quality of Life, Pain Management, and Palliative Care, among others.
The topic of palliative care is especially relevant for physicians who treat patients with malignant mesothelioma cancer, a fatal disease that manifests in the pleura, peritoneum and pericardium and is attributed to previous asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma is notoriously difficult to diagnose and treat, as its symptoms mimic those of other, similar ailments such as lung cancer. Also known as asbestos cancer, mesothelioma has a bleak prognosis, and despite palliative treatment efforts such as mesothelioma chemotherapy, the majority of sufferers lose their battle with this disease in less than two years following their diagnosis.
Nurses, oncologists, surgeons, pharmacists, psychologists, nutritionists and other medical professionals who work with cancer patients are encouraged to attend the symposium. An award will be submitted to “Young Investigators” at the event as well. Medical professionals under the age of forty who submit an abstract to MASCC that is ranked in the top 20% and have been in practice for two years or less are eligible. In addition, travel scholarships were granted to a limited number of international professionals to assist in the funding of travel expenses related to symposium attendance.
