High-Speed Train Slams into Group of Pedestrians in Spain, at least 12 Killed

At least 12 people have been killed and more than a dozen left injured after a high-speed train passing through a Spanish railway station slammed into a group of youths who had been attempting to cross the tracks.

According to reports the large group had just arrived at the station from Barcelona and had been heading to a beach for the annual San Juan summer festival. Rather than take an underpass intended for pedestrians the group reportedly jumped the tracks and tried to cross to the other side of the station.

As the group was crossing the tracks a second train, heading from the opposite direction, slammed directly into the group.

Speaking after the tragedy Spain’s interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba stated “We're shocked. It's horrible. The only thing we can do at the moment is send a message of solidarity to the families of those who died and wish that those who are injured will recover as soon as possible.”
