Suspect in College Student’s Murder in Mexico Escapes from Prison

A suspect arrested in the murder of David Parrish, a 21-year-old student at the University of Colorado, escaped from the Mexican prison in which he was being held after he bribed his cell mate to switch identities.

Parrish had been walking in Puerto Vallarta when Alfonso Ramirez Sastre and Daniel Vargas approached and attempted to rob him. The American resisted and was shot by Ramirez.

Both Ramirez and Vargas were arrested in the murder but on Friday Ramirez, the suspected gunman, was able to fool a prison guard into thinking he was another prisoner who was scheduled for release.

Parrish had been in Mexico with his mother during Spring Break.
