Nun Gambles Away More than $250,000 of Archdiocese of Omaha Money

Sister Barbara Markey, a 73-year-old Roman Catholic nun in Omaha, Nebraska, has pled guilty to a charge of theft of more than $1,500 following an archdiocese audit that indicated she had stolen more than $250,000 to pay for and cover gambling debts.

As part of her plea Markey agreed to pay the $125,000 in restitution and will likely get probation. Sentencing is set for July and while probation is likely, Markey is still facing up to 20 years.

Markey was found to be stealing from the archdiocese after an audit showed the nun had spent $307,545 on her own accord without documentation between Dec. 2003 and Jan. 2006. Prosecutors have said Markey used the money for trips and gifts but the majority went to gambling.
