The 28-year reign of presidential power may soon be over for Zimbabwe leader Robert Mugabe after a presidential election race indicated opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai collected the most votes yet the Saturday total wasn’t enough to prevent a runoff, something Mugabe wanted to avoid.
Figures from the election have not been made public but most believe that Mugabe trailed by a large enough margin that if he were to declare himself the winner there would be violent backlash.
Instead, Mugabe advisers are in talks with Tsvangirai about the possibility of transferring power to the opposition leader.
Mugabe, 82, has been in power since leading a seven-year war to end white minority rule in Zimbabwe. He took the presidential seat in 1980 and has held that post since.
