Pot Proves Harmful to Babysitter

Many say it should be legalized, but marijuana wasn’t so harmless when a babysitter recently lit up and then lost a child in her care.

When a three-year-old wandered out onto a highway in South Dakota, who would have suspected marijuana was to blame?  But it turns out that the child’s 18-year-old babysitter was arrested for allegedly smoking marijuana while the girl was in her care.

Authorities allege Walkingeagle left the toddler in a car in the parking lot of the apartment complex while she went to the garage to go get high with her uncle and cousin. Cops believe the child was alone for 20 to 30 minutes while Walkingeagle sparked up.

Chelsea Walkingeagle was charged with felony child neglect for smoking pot with other family members in a garage while the toddler was left alone to wander down a busy roadway, according to South Dakota police officials.

Fortunately, the toddler wasn’t hurt.

Walkingeagle was released on her own recognizance on the condition she passes regular drug tests every three weeks. Her next hearing is on June 17, 2010, and she faces up to five years in prison if convicted of the charges.
