Explosion in Oconomowoc, WI Destroys Church, Damages Homes

An explosion in Oconomowoc, WI destroyed First Baptist Church, damaged two houses and caused another fire on Wednesday. Seven people were injured in the explosion.

One man was airlifted to Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital. Three men and one woman were taken to Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital with cuts, bruises and abrasions. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

The explosion happened around 1:30pm CST, an hour after WE Energies workers called the fire department after smelling gas. The explosion demolished nearby First Baptist Church, a church that was built in 1895.

Oconomowoc is about 30 miles west of Milwaukee with a population of 12,500.
