North Korea’s Ruling Communist Party to Select New Leaders

North Korea’s state media has reported the country’s ruling communist party will be holding a rare meeting in September designed to select new leaders for the Workers’ Party of Korea.

With leader Kim Jong-il believed to be in ill health the WKP is now looking to lay the foundation for the future. It has long been rumored that Kim Jong-il has been grooming his son, Kim Jong-un, to take over the leadership position and that could be verified when the party’s top leaders meet in just over two months.

The meeting was made known by the North Korean Central News Agency which quoted the WKP as saying “We are now faced with the sacred revolutionary tasks to develop the WPK... into an eternal glorious party of Kim Il-sung and further increase its militant function and role to glorify the country as a great prosperous and powerful socialist nation.”

Kim Jong-un, 27, has taken a role in North Korea’s policy making and has accompanied his father on a number of inspection tours.
