U.S. Sailor Arrested by Japanese Police in Stabbing Death of Taxi Driver

A U.S. sailor was arrested by Japanese police on Thursday in connection to the stabbing death of a taxi driver in Tokyo last month.

The murder of Masaaki Takahashi, 61, took place just outside a U.S. naval base and led to a backlash against the presence of U.S. military troops in the country.

On Thursday the U.S. agreed to turn over the 22-year-old sailor who had been a crew member on the USS Cowpens. Police have said that the sailor’s credit card was found in the taxi, leading them to believe he had been involved in the murder.

According to different reports the man arrested was believed to be a Nigerian national who was serving in the U.S. Navy.
