Guinea Holding Historic Presidential Elections, Voters Cast Ballot in First Democratic Poll Since Independence

Guinea is holding what is being regarded as its first democratic presidential election since it won independence in 1958, a move that had been promised by military ruler Sekouba Konate.

After more than 50 years of rule by military and civilian autocrats Konate vowed to return the country to civilian rule, saying he would not run in the process nor would he allow any member of his administration to stand for the presidency.

Konate ascended to power shortly after the death of Lansana Conte in 2008. Guinea had been under the control of Conte for more than two decades. With the military in power the rights of civilians were severely limited and the country reached a breaking point in September of last year when troops opened fire at pro-democracy demonstrations.

With the pledge of Konate to hand power back to the people there was a renewed sense of hope and on Sunday there were long lines at polling stations as many looked to cast their first democratic ballot.

While none of the 24 candidates standing for election are expected to win outright there are three frontrunners which include former Prime Ministers Dalein Diallo and Sidya Toure as well as opposition leader Alpha Conde. Sunday’s results should be known within three days and a run-off will then be held on July 18 between the frontrunners.
