While Heston captured the Oscar as Best Actor in a Leading Role for “Ben-Hur” he also found huge success in other Hollywood epics like “The Ten Commandments,” “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” “Antony and Cleopatra,” and “Planet of the Apes.”
Throughout his career Heston involved himself in social issues, often campaigning for civil rights and was a strong advocate for the Democratic party but by the 1980 he had switched his allegiance to the Republican party and threw his support behind Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush.
Heston concentrated a lot of his attention on gun rights and eventually became president of the National Rifle Association in 1998 and served in that role five years. In 2003 Heston was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor.
In 2002 Heston publicly announced that he had been diagnosed with symptoms consistent with Alzheimer’s disease.
