Jessie Hall, a 6-year-old girl from Aledo, Texas, is scheduled to have half her brain removed as a means of combating a potentially deadly disease she has carried since birth.
Hall was diagnosed with Rasmussen’s encephalitis, a rare disease that eats away at the right side of the brain. While Hall has been able to carry on with the normal activities of a young girl the disease has caused multiple seizures and she has lost the ability to use her left arm.
The surgery to remove half her brain, called a hemispherectomy, will be performed at Johns Hopkins Hospital later this year. Following the surgery Hall will have to undergo intense rehabilitation to re-learn many of the functions she will likely lose.
