A minor earthquake struck two counties close to San Antonio, Texas on Monday, receiving a 3.7 on the Richter Scale.
The earthquake's epicenter was about 3.1 miles underground and 6 miles southwest of Falls City, which is located in Karnes County. Residents in both Karnes and Wilson counties felt the trembler, according to San Antonio news reports.
The first Texas earthquake that the United States Geological Society (USGS) lists on its website happened on Oct. 22, 1882. The quake's magnitude was not recorded, but it is presumed to be larger than Monday's quake because it was felt over 145,000 square miles. The next earthquake struck on May 3, 1887 and was felt in Arizona and New Mexico as well as across Texas.
An earthquake on Aug. 16, 1931 was the first with a recorded magnitude (6.4).
The USGS site lists nearly two-dozen quakes, of all sizes, in Texas since 1882. The last quake of more than a magnitude of four was a 4.5 quake on Feb. 15, 1974 that was felt over 14,000 square miles.
Due to the 45-mile distance away from San Antonio, it is likely that the earthquake will not affect the NCAA Championship Game Monday night. The NCAA men's college basketball finals will be played in San Antonio's Alamodome.
