The British Emerging Trends in Oncology Conference serves as an update on important clinical information addressed at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The intent of this conference is to review the data that is most relevant to the United Kingdom during an interactive question-and-answer session. The session is held via satellite from The Royal Society of Medicine in London with venues in Belfast, Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds, Maidstone, Manchester and Newcastle.
The American Society of Clinical Oncology is the world’s leading cancer organization. However, the Society does not sanction or participate in the Emerging Trends in Oncology Education Programme Conference.
This event is created specifically for doctors who are interested in learning more about the varied and developing treatment options for patients with solid malignant tumors. Specialized nurses and pharmacists are also welcome to attend.
The objectives of the conference are to discuss potential changes to clinical practices in the United Kingdom and to address the appropriate implementation of these changes. The conference also works to assess the impact of these potential changes and to review new areas of research and their future impact on treatment regimens for patients with solid malignant tumors.
Among the many types of oncologists expected to participate in this event, mesothelioma doctors will make up an important segment of attendees. Malignant mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the lining of the chest or the abdomen. Mesothelioma cancer is more likely to be developed in those individuals who have been exposed to airborne asbestos particles, and mesothelioma treatment typically includes surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or a combination of the three.
Mesothelioma specialists are working to uncover important developments in the treatment of malignant mesothelioma and advances in early detection. This movement is spearheaded by such renowned physicians as Dr. David Sugarbaker of the Harvard Medical School, and cancer centers such as MD Anderson Cancer Center. This center is renowned for its innovative clinical trials, as well as its successful children’s cancer hospital and childhood survivor’s clinic. The MD Anderson Cancer Center has a total of twelve Cancer Care Centers and eleven Specialty and Treatment Centers.
International events, such as the Emerging Trends in Oncology Educational Programme Conference, are key to reaching the improvement goals set by American and foreign specialists alike.
The UK event is chaired by Nicholas Thatcher, MD, PhD, Professor of Medical Oncology at Christie Hospital NHS Trust in Manchester, who is not only in charge of this year’s welcomes and introductions, but will also be leading a presentation on lung cancer. Additional presentations will be given on breast, gastrointestinal and genitourinary cancer, followed up by a discussion panel.
