Benigro “Noynoy” Aquino has been sworn in as president of the Philippines following a resounding victory in May’s elections. The ceremony was held in Manila’s seaside Rizal Park with as many as 500,000 people attending the event.

Speaking to the massive crowd Aquino said “Today our dreams start to become a reality. It's the end of a leadership that has long been insensitive to the suffering of the people.”

Aquino, son of former president Cory Aquino, has pledged to eradicate corruption, put an end to insurgencies and modernize the judicial system.

As part of his pledge to end corruption Aquino has said he will investigate allegations that surrounded the presidency of Gloria Arroyo. While Aquino plans to investigate the allegations he also plans to continue Arroyo’s pursuit of peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels who have continued to carry out attacks in the south.
