President Barack Obama Declares State of Emergency in Texas as Hurricane Alex Set to Hit Land

U.S. President Barack Obama has declared a state of emergency in Texas as Hurricane Alex makes its way closer to the state’s Gulf Coast.

Hurricane Alex, the first Atlantic hurricane of the season, is expected to hit the Texas Mexico border near Brownsville as a category two storm with winds currently topping 80 mph. Forecasters have predicted hurricane Alex will make landfall by late Wednesday.

Those winds have caused massive problems in the Gulf as the BP oil spill clean-up efforts have been suspended in some areas as the U.S. Coast Guard has sent many of the boats back to port. Alex hasn’t affected the oil recovery efforts at the scene of the leak, about 50 miles off the Louisiana coast, as two ships continue to capture oil pouring from the damaged underwater well.
