Navy SEAL Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael A. Monsoor saved the lives of at least two fellow SEALs on Sept. 29, 2006 when he threw his body atop a grenade in Ramadi, Iraq and on Tuesday President George Bush presented the Medal of Honor to his family in recognition of his “extraordinary heroism.”
Monsoor had been a platoon machine gunner and was part of a sniper security team that included three other SEAL s and eight Iraqi soldiers on that September day when an insurgent threw a grenade that struck Monsoor in the chest. Rather than run for cover the 25-year-old threw his body atop the grenade and absorbed the blast, effectively saving the lives of those in his party.
Because of Monsoor’s act the two SEALs next to him only suffered injuries while the third SEAL escaped injury all together.
Monsoor became the fourth person to receive the Medal of Honor since the war on terror was launched.
