One of al Qaeda’s top 10 leaders, Abu Ubaida al-Masri, has been confirmed dead by U.S. officials on Wednesday. The cause of death is said to be of natural causes.
Known as a bomb expert, al-Masri had been responsible for al Qaeda external operations. Al-Masri is believed to be responsible for the 2005 London subway bombing in which 52 people were killed. The explosives expert is also believed to have orchestrated a plot to blow up transatlantic flights to the U.S. and Canada in the summer of 2006.
Not much is known about the Egyptian born al-Masri but officials speculate that he was about 40 and may have died from hepatitis.
