Israel Renews Talks for Release of Captured Soldier Gilad Shalit

Israel has renewed its efforts to secure the release of captured soldier Gilad Shalit, once again offering 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the 23-year-old’s freedom.

Shalit was seized by Hamas militants on the Gaza border in 2006 and Israeli attempts to broker his freedom have consistently broken down. Last year it appeared as if Israel and Hamas were nearing a deal but ultimately the two sides couldn’t agree on Palestinian prisoners to be freed.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been cautious about the renewed efforts, saying he would not pay “any price” for Shalit’s release. Netanyahu made the comment during a televised address in which he said experience had shown that Palestinian militants who had been released often returned to violence.

Netanyahu did say that his offer from December remained goo and was “ready for immediate implementation” but he has received no word from Hamas.
