Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has said he will attend emergency talks with regional leaders to discuss the recent presidential election in his country and the continued uncertainty that has clouded the outcome.
Results of the presidential election in Zimbabwe have yet to be released but it is believed that opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai collected more than enough votes to win the presidency. Tsvangirai would need to earn more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid a run-off. Now many are speculating that the delay in election results is tied to Mugabe’s plan to mount a second campaign.
Tsvangirai has been meeting with several leaders in southern Africa appealing to them to put pressure on Mugabe to release the election results
Both Mugabe and Tsvangirai are expected to attend an emergency meeting of the 15 member states of the Southern African Development Community on Saturday. The SADC is designed to promote socio-economic cooperation as well as political and security cooperation among the member states.
