Protest in Kosovo Turns Deadly as Explosion Kills at least One, Eleven More Injured

A protest staged by ethnic Serbs in the Kosovan town of Mitrovan turned deadly on Friday after an explosion killed one person and left eleven more injured.

It is not known what caused the explosion but Kosovo’s Interior Minister Bajram Rexhepi blamed “careless armed Serb protesters.”

Mitrovan is a heavily divided town with ethnic Serbs living in the north and ethnic Albanians in the south and the town has been the scene of numerous clashes as the two groups share different opinions on Kosovo’s independence.

The Serbs have rejected 2008’s declaration of independence from Serbia while the Albanians have backed the measure.

Friday’s protests by the ethnic Serbs centered on the opening of an office by the ethnic-Albanian Kosovo government in the north. Immediately after the blast Serbia’s President Boris Tadic called an emergency meeting of his country’s security council to determine their course of action.
