Riyad al-Nuri, a key senior aide and relative of anti-U.S. cleric Moqtada Sadr, was shot and killed by gunmen as he returned home from Friday prayers.
The attack took place in the Iraqi city of Najaf and police immediately imposed a curfew in the city.
Al-Nuri had been the director of Sadr’s office in Najaf. Sadr’s followers have had a history of clashes with Iraqi and U.S. forces but things have settled since Sadr ordered a cease fire last August.
