Grammy-winning Slipknot Bassist Died by OD

It’s official: another talented musician lost his life to addiction.

Fame, talent and a Grammy weren’t enough to save Slipknot bassist Paul Gray from the grip of addiction. The recently released coroner’s report blamed the May death on an accidental morphine overdose, according to the Polk County, Iowa, medical examiner.

The 38-year-old Gray was found dead in an Iowa hotel room near Des Moines in May 2010, with autopsy results showing he had been dead for several hours before his body was discovered.

The toxicology report showed that Gray had a fatal level of morphine and fentanyl in his system at the time of death, causing an accidental overdose.

Gray’s drug abuse probably wasn’t a complete surprise to those who know him well. His problems with drugs were a matter of public record, dating back to 2003, when Gray was arrested in Iowa on drug possession charges following an auto accident.

Grammy-winning metal band Slipknot was known for wearing creepy homemade masks on stage.  Formed in Des Moines, the band’s self-titled debut album went platinum in 2000.
