A day that was supposed to be spent ice skating ended in tragedy for members of the Walnut Blessing Church of the Nazarene as four members of their youth group were killed on Friday when the car they were traveling hit the center divide along the Pomona Freeway and rolled over.
The five occupants in the Toyota Camry were trying to catch up with the other three vehicles that were traveling to the skating rink when the accident occurred. Three of the five were thrown from the car.
Emergency crews arrived on the scene and pronounced two dead at the scene while the other three were taken to hospitals. Two of those three died later in the day.
The accident caused that section of Pomona Freeway to be shut down in both directions for several hours.
