Poland will be taking to the polls on Sunday, casting their ballot for either Bronislaw Komorowski or Jaroslaw Kaczynski in the country’s second round of voting during their presidential election.
Komorowski has been Poland’s acting president since the April 10 tragedy that claimed the life of President Lech Kaczynski, the twin brother of Jaroslaw. Kacyznski, along with 94 others, were killed in a plane crash in Smolensk while travelling to attend a memorial ceremony.
While Komorowski has the support of the ruling centrist Civic Platform and is expected to win the election Kaczynski has been gaining momentum since his surprising run in the first round of balloting. Komorowski grabbed 41.5% of the votes while Kaczynski, from the main opposition Law and Justice party, finished with 36.5%.
Like much of Europe, Poland is facing financial problems and the presidential election will determine what direction the country goes in curbing spending policies that have led to a massive deficit.
