With a large enough lead in both houses of parliament Silvio Berlusconi has secured a victory in the Italian general election and will hold the office of President of the Council, the third time he has held that position.
Berlusconi, leader of the conservative People of Freedom party, has already seen his main rival Walter Veltroni conceded, opening the door to a position vacated by Premier Romano Prodi.
Prodi was ousted three years ahead of his scheduled departure after Italy’s economy ground to a halt, many believe because of his center-left philosophy.
This was the fifth time Berlusconi has sought the premiership, he held the position from April 1994 to January 1995; again from June 2001 to May 2006; and now.
Berlusconi has promised to cut taxes, reduce government, stimulate the economy and clean the streets.
