Museum officials of Iziko Museums worry that the two 19th century rhino horns stolen from their historic mammal gallery at a South African museum in Cape Town on Saturday will be sold as an aphrodisiac. Officials have expressed their concern for the stolen horns as they are full of poison.
Jatti Bredekamp, chief executive of Iziko Museums states, “Before the mid-twentieth century, taxidermy mounts were prepared by being soaked in arsenic and preserved from insect infestation through regular applications of DDT, both highly toxic poisons that retain their toxicity over time."
Bredenkamp believes the horns were targeted and fears that they may be on their way to Asia where they will be sold as an aphrodisiac.
