Stocks Turn Lower on Mixed Economic and Earnings Data
Stocks have turned mixed as economic uncertainty figures prominently into the market's equation. In equity news, Johnson & Johnson beat the Street's profit estimate but higher guidance failed to impress, while Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines announced plans to merge. US Bancorp topped the Street's profit estimate, and State Street offered cautious commentary. In economic news, the Producer Price Index and a report on factory output exceeded expectations. Treasuries are down and are running into headwinds from higher energy and food costs that were contained in the PPI number. Stocks in Asia finished higher, and Europe is in positive territory.
In late morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 21.34, or 0.17 percent, to 12,280.72.
Broader stock indicators also declined. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.46, or 0.03 percent, to 1,328.78, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 4.29, or 0.19 percent, to 2,271.53.
Bond prices dipped. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, rose to 3.55 percent from 3.51 percent late Monday.
Gold prices rose, while the dollar fell against other major currencies.
