General David Petraeus Takes Command of International Forces in Afghanistan

General David Petraeus has formally taken command of the international forces in Afghanistan, taking over for Gen Stanley McChrystal who was recently fired following negative comments he and his staff made about political officials in Washington and Kabul.

Petraeus will now head the 130,000-plus troops that presently operate in Afghanistan with the hope that he can match the success he had in Iraq. The general managed to significantly reduce the violence in Iraq and move it towards a more democratic society.

While Petraeus would like nothing more than to match that success he has already said Afghanistan will be a difficult task as Taliban militants have proven resilient. During Sunday’s brief ceremony in which he assumed command Petraeus told troops “We are engaged in a tough fight. After years of war we have arrived at a critical moment.”

Petraeus didn’t back down from the challenge that lies ahead, calling the battle in Afghanistan a “contest of wills” and confidently saying “we are in this to win.”
