Zimbabwe Election Chaos Continues as 50 Opposition Supporters Arrested During Strike

Supporters of Morgan Tsvangirai and his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party clashed with police on Tuesday as the tension over Zimbabwe’s election results continue to mount.

According to the MDC, at least 50 supporters had been arrested after the party staged a nation-wide strike is response to delays in the publication of Zimbabwe’s presidential election. Tsvangirai is believed to have captured the office but current president Robert Mugabe has refused to step down and is said to be orchestrating a strategy for a run-off campaign.

It has been nearly two weeks since Zimbabwe went to the polls and since that time there have been several reports of violence towards opposition supporters. On Tuesday police said the majority of those arrested were for obstruction and intimidation.

The MDC reported that two of its activists had been killed during Tuesday’s strike and several hundered had been injured.
