Sharpe James, Former Newark Mayor, Convicted for Corruption

Sharpe James, the former Mayor of Newark, N.J., and his ex-mistress Tamika Riley were convicted Wednesday of corruption stemming from the sale of city land.

James was convicted of selling properties to Riley, who quickly flipped them and earned hundreds of thousands of dollars in profits.

James, 72, was found guilty on all five counts that he faced. Riley, 39, was convicted on the same fraud and conspiracy charges as well as eight others for numerous tax violations in connection with her failure to file income tax returns for her public relations firm.

James and Riley face up to about eight years in prison. Both are currently free on bail and will face sentencing on July 29. James intends to appeal the verdict, according to the The Newark Star-Ledger.

James was the Democratic mayor of Newark for 20 years until 2006 and a state senator from 1999 to 2008.
