Bronislaw Komorowski Nearing Victory in Poland’s Presidential Election

Results from Poland’s presidential election continue to favor Civic Platform candidate Bronislaw Komorowski, indicating the country’s acting president has a 5% lead over Law and Justice candidate Jaroslaw Kaczynski with 95% of the votes counted.

While Komorowski has been favored to take the run-off election and officially become Poland’s next president he has found it difficult to distance himself from Kaczynski.

Kaczynski is the twin brother of former President Lech Kaczynski who was killed, along with 95 others, when their plane went down in April while traveling to attend a memorial ceremony in Smolensk.

Following the tragedy Komorowski was given the nod as acting president from his ruling Civic Platform party but Kaczynski quickly found himself back in the political arena and declared himself a candidate for the presidential election.

Shedding a negative image that existed since his time as the country’s prime minister, Kaczynski stunned many with a strong showing in the initial voting round and forced Sunday’s run-off election.
