Israel has confirmed the easing of its current blockade of the Gaza Strip, allowing consumer goods into the Palestinian territory while establishing a “black list” that includes items that could be used by Hamas militants to launch attacks.
The announcement comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepares to travel to the United States to meet with President Barack Obama. The American leader has been one of the most vocal critics of Israel’s blockade since nine activists were killed during an Israeli raid on a flotilla of ships that were attempting to carry aid to Gaza.
Israel has insisted a blockade of the Gaza Strip has been necessary to prevent weapons and materials that could be used for military purposes from reaching Hamas. While Israel insisted the blockade was keeping Hamas at bay it also left Palestinians without a number of basic goods and was criticized by many in the international community.
Monday’s announcement that the blockade would be eased is Israel’s attempt to ease the pressure they have felt since the deadly raids but Hamas has dismissed the news as meaningless, demanding that Israel fully lift the blockade.
