The Chicago Housing Authority is holding a lottery for Section 8 housing on RentBetter.org, starting Thursday.
40,000 spots on the Chicago Housing Authority waiting list for federally subsidized rental housing are available on the lottery.
The rental vouchers, best known as Section 8 can, will be available for people who enter the lottery for one of the spots on the waiting list.
CHA officials estimate that some of the lottery winners could receive a voucher by the middle of the summer.
The registration process for the lottery will run for a month, ending May 15.
Due to the rapid demolition of low-income housing and gentrification in Chicago, families that have been evicted from a high-rise has automatically moved to the top of the Section 8 waiting list, with a temporary voucher to hold them over.
RentBetter.org is the official site for the lottery and was established by the city of Chicago. The Rent Better website is located at www.rentbetter.org.
