Summer Camp Teaches Kids to Speak with Good Purpose

At the teen summer camp, SuperCamp, students learn a number of communication and interpersonal skills to help them improve their school, family and personal relationships and develop these skills that last a lifetime.

At one academic summer camp, teens and pre-teens learn that words have the power to build people up and bring them down. The summer camp is SuperCamp and the lesson is called “Speak With Good Purpose,” which is one of the 8 Keys of Excellence kids ages 9-18 learn while at the 10-day summer program.

Campers learn that words can uplift and enlighten, or depress and destroy. They also learn that they have complete control over the words they use, so they must choose them carefully. Participants are taught that the first step is awareness – to think before they speak and to focus on communicating positives: strengths, praise, and encouragement.

Communication is a major topic at all of SuperCamp’s summer camp programs. It is the bridge between people—it’s the glue that holds all relationships together. It’s what forms the link between husband and wife, between parent and child, between teacher and student, between friends, siblings, partners, and co-workers. Relationships thrive or wither depending on the quality of the communication that serves them.

Speaking with good purpose can be a challenge—it takes courage, effort, and practice. But when one masters this skill the quality of relationships will change for the better.

At SuperCamp’s academic summer camps, students learn many other life skills that help them at school and in life – leadership, team building, peer connection, time management, goal setting, critical thinking and more are covered over the 10 days.
