After a much tighter race than initially anticipated Bronislaw Komorowski has officially been declared the winner of Poland’s presidential election, edging Jaroslaw Kaczynski with 53.01% of the vote compared to 46.99%.
Komorowski entered the presidential election as Poland’s acting president, holding the office since April’s tragic plane crash in Smolensk that killed President Lech Kaczynski and 95 others. Many believed that Komorowski, who had the backing of the ruling Civic Platform, would easily win the election but when Lech’s twin brother Jaroslaw made it known he would pursue the presidency the June election changed.
Jaroslaw, the Law and Justice candidate, managed to rally a strong base and produced an impressive showing in the first round, forcing Sunday’s run-off election. That run-off was also much closer than anticipated as the results remained unclear heading into Monday.
That uncertainty was put to rest by midday when election officials announced Komorowski had a clear victory and was Poland’s new president.
