Opposition leader Raila Odinga was officially sworn in as prime minister of Kenya on Thursday, ready now to take part in a power-sharing deal with President Mwai Kibaki following the violent presidential elections held last year.
Odinga, leader of the Orange Democratic Movement, had claimed that those elections had been rigged to favor his one-time ally Kibaki. In the aftermath of those December elections more than 1,500 people have been killed while more than 600,000 have been forced to abandon their homes to escape violence.
Both Odinga and Kibaki had worked together in the 2002 Kenyan presidential elections butteh two quickly fell out after Kibaki unseated Daniel arap Moi and snubbed Odinga when announcing his prime minister.
Odinga addressed those bitter feelings with a message of moving forward on Thursday when he promised to build a more inclusive Kenya. He said his cabinet would focus on resettling those who were forced to flee due to violence.
