Rare Swinhoe Soft Shell Turtle Found in Vietnam

A giant turtle that scientists believed was extinct in the wild was found in Northern Vietnam. Researchers from the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo discovered that Swinhoe soft-shell turtle and notified Vietnamese government.

 

A picture of the giant turtle was sent to turtle expert Peter Pritchard. “It looked like pretty solid evidence. The animal has a pretty distinctive head,” Pritchard said.

 

There are three other known Swinhoes are in captivity. Two in Chinese zoos and the other is in the Hoan Kiem Lake.
