Prescription Drug Addiction in Florida

Florida prescription drug abuse has drastically skyrocket over the years. In fact, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency has reported that unprecedented increases in levels of abuse of prescription drugs pose a serious threat to the health and safety of Florida citizens.  This is largely due to the number of "Pill Mills" operating illegally in Florida.

"Pill Mill" refers to a term where unscrupulous doctors sell prescription drugs after perfunctory or non-existent medical examinations, which has also taken place to a large degree over the Internet. Recently an Ohio Grand Jury charged 12 people, several from Florida and Georgia, and 2 businesses as being involved in an Internet pill mill conspiracy. Pill mills are big business in Florida, which is creating a greater need for addiction help.

Florida has a great deal of illegal prescription drug trafficking due to unethical practices by those in the health care profession, those who forge prescriptions and those who steal prescription drugs from pharmacies and other sources..  Trafficking is often done through the Internet and Tampa has become the main hub for Florida’s Internet diversion.  The real cause of the illegal prescription drug trade is in the demand created by those who are addicted.

Narconon Gulf Coast has for years been successfully delivering prescription drug treatment. They are a non-profit drug rehabilitation organization that has a greater than 90% success rate in handling drug addiction, including prescription drug addiction. As the use of prescription drugs rise, so have the number of addicts reporting being addicted to pharmaceuticals.

Prescription drugs are regulated largely because of their high abuse potential. Even when a doctor discontinues a prescription, the cravings the patient experiences for the drug can be so intense as to urge the patient to seek some other source for the drug. There are many traps. Many web sites pose as being legitimate when in fact are simply illegal pill mills operating. When that fails there is always the unscrupulous doctor.
