An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 shook the Midwest this morning. The epicenter, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), was three miles below ground, 131 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri, six miles northwest of Mount Carmel, Illinois and 38 miles north-northwest of Evansville, Indiana.
The predawn quake occurred at 4:36 this morning. WHAS-TV, a CNN affiliate in Lousiville, Kentucky showed footage released footage of damage done in Kentucky. The video revealed rubble from a brick building after a cornice fell in the quake.
The Associated Press reported that locals in southern Michigan and even as far west as Des Moines, Iowa reported feeling the quake.
WRTV-TV, an Indiana CNN affiliate, reported that air traffic came to a stop after the control tower at the Indianapolis International Airport was evacuated.
The USGS web site stated that at least 30 people reported to feel the quake in Clarksville, Tennessee, 227 miles south of the epicenter.
People were shaken awake in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and buildings were swayed in Chicago’s loop, says the AP.
Even people as far as southwest Michigan and northeast Georgia contacted CNN claiming that they felt the tremor.
David Behm of Philo, Illinois told the AP, “It shook our house were it woke me up.” He continued to say, “Windows were rattling, and you could hear it. the house was shaking inches. For people in central Illinois, this is a big deal. It’s not like California.”
According to the USGS, the largest recorded earthquake occurred in Illinois in 1968. That earthquake was a magnitude 5.4.
