Danny Federici, the long-time keyboardist for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, died on Thursday at the age of 58 after a three year battle with melanoma.
According to the Bruce Springsteen official Web site Federici had been the organist and keyboardist for the E Street Band for 40 years. Springsteen noted on the site, “he was the most wonderfully fluid keyboard player and a pure natural musician. I loved him very much...we grew up together.”
It was actually Federici and drummer Vini Lopez who formed the E Street Band and invited Springsteen to join.
Federici had been touring with Springsteen last year but took a leave of absence in November to receive treatment for melanoma. He died on Thursday at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
As musicians go, Federici refrained from the extravagant life-style and over-the-top stage persona and concentrated on putting down the sound that others could play off; Springsteen had called him “one of the pillars of our sound.”
