E Street Band Keyboardist Danny Federici Dies at 58

Danny Federici, the longtime keyboardist for Bruce Springsteen, died Thursday. The 58-year-old had been battling melanoma for 3 years. He died at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York yesterday.

Federici and drummer Vini Lopez asked Bruce Springsteen to join their E Street Band. Springsteen left the band in the late 80’s. They reunited in 1999 for a tour. Federici last played with Springsteen in March.

“Danny and I worked together for 40 years – he was the most wonderfully fluid keyboard player and a pure natural musician. I loved him very much…we grew up together,” Springsteen said in a message posted on his Web site.
