Jimmy Carter ignored the pleas of Democrats and Republicans alike and opted to meet with Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal in Syria on Friday in efforts to stimulate peace talks between Palestinians and Israelis.
Former President Carter’s willingness to meet with the leader of a recognized terrorist organization not only angered those in the United States but upset several in Israel ; many officials have now refused to speak with Carter.
Carter is hoping to broker a peace deal that would end the violent conflict that continues to make headlines. As part of his talks with Meshaal, Carter is hoping to secure the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit who was captured during raids by Palestinian militant groups two years ago.
Meshaal has said he is willing to address a ceasefire that includes the West Bank and involves the reopening of Gaza’s borders.
