Bill Maher has found himself in hot water once more as the acerbic host of HBO’s “Real Time” was blasted for his recent comments that Pope Benedict XVI “used to be a Nazi and he wears funny hats.” Maher went on to say the Catholic Church was “a child-abusing religious cult” and linked the Church to “organized pedophilia.”
HBO President Sue Naegle was flooded with letters and calls about Maher’s comments and in one letter crafted by several New York officials his comments were said to have “crossed the line of decency by insulting the Pope, mocking the Catholic religion and Catholics and diminishing the importance of the Catholic faith.”
The letter to Naegle ended, “Therefore, we call upon HBO to acknowledge the offensive nature of Mr. Maher’s remarks and to apologize for playing a role in spreading his anti-Catholic commentary. The Catholic religion will continue to foster faith, forgiveness and goodness throughout our world -- and maybe that’s a lesson Mr. Maher can learn from.”
Maher is now said to be prepared to issue an apology for his comments.
