Summer Enrichment Camp Teaches Students How To Increase Reading Speed and Comprehension

In every aspect of life, and every academic class, there is one trait that ties everything together. Reading. Reading gives us pleasure, vital information, and directions to get us through our everyday lives. When it comes to reading skills, SuperCamp, a leading academic summer camp for kids and teens, has created the perfect recipe to help students simultaneously read faster and comprehend more.

During the 10-day
summer enrichment program, students participate in multiple academic sessions that equip them with the learning and life skills necessary to be successful in the classroom, rather than learning actual curriculum itself. During the Quantum Reading session, students from the middle school to college levels are taught a valuable five-step process to make their reading more powerful.

First, campers learn how to ‘Prepare.’ They check in with their attitude and beliefs to make sure they are ready for what’s ahead. At SuperCamp, students are taught how to ask themselves questions in order to get excited about the reading. Students also learn about optimal lighting, posture, and how to set up the best environment for reading.

Next, students learn how to ‘Get Into State.’ By placing themselves into “alpha state,” the prime mental state for learning and retention, students are preparing their brains to take in and store information in a way that can be easily recalled later on.

The fourth step students learn is how to effectively use their ‘Eyes and Hands’ to aid their brain in the reading process. By using their peripheral vision and soft eyes, students are taught how to prevent eye fatigue while also using their hands to guide their eyes along the page. Students even learn how to effectively turn the page so as to not trip up their brain in the down moment.

By becoming an ‘Eagle Reader’, students are able to ‘SuperScan and Read’ in a way that is quick, easy, and allows them to effectively understand the material. They know how to scan pictures, graphs, headlines, and important words before reading the full text.

Finally, students are shown how to ‘Review’ in order to cement the learning. By taking notes through an innovative note-taking style called Mind Mapping, and also by verbally recalling the information with others, students learn the combination to transfer the reading into their long-term memory.

Through SuperCamp’s Quantum Reading program, thousands of students age 11-19 have been able to successfully increase their reading speed to upwards of 1,000 words per minute, while increasing their comprehension by as much as 50 percent or more! SuperCamp’s summer enrichment programs are a fantastic opportunity for students to relearn how to be excited about the process of reading, and school in general.
