Brazil priest carried away by balloons; still missing

Rescuers searched the waters off the Atlantic coast of Brazil for a missing priest who took off Sunday in an attempt to set a record for flying the most hours with helium balloons.

The Rev. Adelir Antonio de Carli, 41, was strapped to a seat attached to a huge cluster of red, green, yellow and white helium party balloons. Wearing a helmet, a thermal suit and carrying a GPS device and a satellite phone, Carli was reported missing about eight hours after losing contact with authorities.

As an experienced skydiver, Carli attempted the record-breaking balloon flight in an effort to raise money to fund a spiritual rest stop for Brazilian truckers.

Seas were calm Tuesday in the area where Carli disappeared, and the ocean’s temperature was a mild 68 degrees Farenheit, prompting rescue leaders to voice confidence that Carli could survive in the water for at least five days.

A video of Carli posted on Globo TV’s G1 Web site showed him smiling as he slipped into his flight suit.
