Strange Unidentified Lights Spotted Over St. Augustine, Florida

The unidentified lights over St. Augustine, Florida may not have been so strange.

Reports from residents in the area near St. Augustine’s airport claimed strange lights streaked across the sky Saturday night.

“I looked up and it was like these two fiery balls like flying across the sky, sort of in a formation, they were like flying towards each other, “ said Brandon Puckett.

Others claim there is a logical explanation for the strange sighting: sky lanterns – life-size hot air balloons, traditionally used in Asian festivals.

Apparently two sky lanterns were released in Jacksonville Saturday as part of a wedding reception, according to an internet post on a north Florida newspaper’s website.

Traditionally made of oiled rice paper with a bamboo frame, the sky lanterns contain a small candle or fuel cell that when heated, creates smoke that causes tha lentern to rise. The sky lanterns can remain airborne until the fuel is exhausted.
